Interior in Klösterli Weincafé in Bern

The Klösterli Weincafé is located in a beautiful traditional house. Inside, wood dominates with open shelves for wine.

The service was consistently friendly. The staff, for example, made sure to advise us on how to use the gas stove (more on this below).

During our visit, we first had a beer from Alten Tramdepot, a local brewery. As a starter, I enjoyed a soup made from caramelized carrots, which the server brought out hot. At CHF 14.50, however, it was on the pricier side.

For the main course, I chose the house specialty, an entrecôte in a copper pan. A gas stove was brought to the table first. Then, generously seared meat along with herb butter was placed in the copper pan. Additionally, there were fried potatoes and vegetables in a small cast-iron pot. As recommended by the knowledgeable server, I first placed the meat on my plate and then cooked it piece by piece in the herb butter in the copper pan. It’s important to set the stove at the right temperature; otherwise, the herb butter will burn.

The food was delicious, and there was a generous amount of meat. However, CHF 54 for the entrecôte is on the pricier side. A small critique is that the chef sliced the meat along the grain, whereas typically meat is sliced against the grain to make it appear more tender.

We drank a Spanish wine from a Magnum bottle with the meal.

The following coffee was aromatic. The ginger beer we ordered complemented the coffee perfectly. One of my tablemates ordered an affogato – a scoop of vanilla ice cream topped with espresso. The espresso was nicely served in a mini carafe.
