Our Experience at Waldheim Bern

Waldheim Bern from outside

Bistro-style interior with lots of wood and floral decorations

The pale yellow building with its mighty chestnut trees already conveys an elegant impression from the outside. Guests enter the restaurant through a lovely wooden door with a window. Inside, wood dominates – initially with the paneled walls. The tables and chairs are also made of wood - the latter covered in white.

The hostess, Regula Minder, values floral arrangements, which is why truly enchanting bouquets stand in vases on the tables. We were greeted friendly upon entering. In general, we were served very warmly, charmingly, and attentively throughout our visit.

Small Menu and Fresh Cuisine

The menu at Waldheim Bern is really small. At lunchtime, there is a choice of classic dishes such as Beef Steak Tartare alongside a rotating daily lunch menu. The evening menu also includes classic dishes such as Cordon Bleu or calves liver with Rösti potatoes. In addition, there is a "Menu du Chef" in the evening – a separate menu with creative dishes.

I opted for a small mixed green salad, followed by a Cordon Bleu. The salad consisted of lettuce leaves, radish strips, and microgreens. The dressing was a simple vinaigrette, with a tad too much vinegar.

The Cordon Bleu was accompanied by Bernese French fries and a vegetable bouquet. The Cordon Bleu was not greasy, meaning it wasn't deep-fried. When cut open, the savory cheese flowed out like lava. The French fries were served in a metal basket. They were well-seasoned, and the portion size was sufficient. The vegetables included carrots, peas, and yellow carrots. The kitchen also prepared the vegetables very well, cooked al dente. Above all, it was also well-drained, which I always appreciate.

During our visit, we also treated ourselves to dessert. I had a Crème Brulée with tonka beans. This means the cream was flavored with tonka beans and then topped with a crust of burnt sugar.
