Our Experience at Fischerstübli Bern
Charming Venue with Wood Interior
Whenever I go to the Matte district, I get almost a holiday feeling every time. The Aare is so close, the street is cobblestone, and the buildings look very idyllic. Right in the middle are Fischerstübli Bern and its beautiful terrace. Since the weather was a bit cool, we sat inside. Fischerstübli is truly a “Stübli” – simply furnished with bistro chairs and wooden tables, combined with white walls. Simple but cozy!
Small Menu and Home-Cooked Dishes
A look at the menu reveals a manageable selection, which I always take as a good sign for fresh preparation. According to their website, Fischerstübli cooks everything themselves – without processed products. A specialty is the tartare, with many variations on the menu.
The service staff pointed out the daily special. This included a beetroot-sweet potato soup as a starter. Although I originally planned to just order a salad, I decided on this soup instead. For the main course, I chose chicken breast on wild garlic risotto. I was actually toying with the idea of having the tarte tatin for dessert.
Culinary Experience and Summary
The soup was good – not quite hot. The taste was slightly sweet, as expected – naturally from the sweet potatoes. I couldn’t really taste the beetroot – but I could taste the coconut milk that was also used. The croutons and pumpkin seeds were a plus. The main course, chicken breast on wild garlic risotto with morel sauce, was also solid. The chicken was well roasted in the oven, and the sauce was tasty. However, the risotto was far too soft. In my ideal version, the rice in a risotto is still slightly al dente, while the risotto overall melts creamy and slightly fluid. The wild garlic risotto unfortunately didn’t meet this standard. There could be various reasons, but the texture of the risotto just wasn’t right.
The service was correct and friendly. I wouldn’t describe it as warm; the service staff came across as almost a bit “strict” to me. Not impolite, but not exuberant either. Overall, the experience at this charming venue was fine. On my next visit, I would try the house specialty, the tartare.
