Our Dining Experience at Nido Bern
Nido Bern View and Atmosphere
The way to Nido leads by elevator to the top floor of the Loeb department store, followed by a final staircase (alternatively, a lift is available for guests with limited mobility). Upon entering the restaurant, an impressive interior reveals itself: elegant, refined, and with a touch of exclusivity.
The clientele at Nido is noticeably upscale – business people, affluent guests, and connoisseurs who value fine dining. Despite this formal atmosphere, the restaurant radiates a pleasant warmth. The service is attentive and friendly from the start, which eases the tension even for somewhat nervous guests.
The absolute highlight: the breathtaking panoramic view over Bern’s Old Town all the way to the imposing Alpine range. This view is unmatched in Bern and makes every visit a visual experience.
Business Lunch at a High Culinary Level
At lunchtime, Nido offers a compact menu as well as a business lunch. Although the beef fillet Rossini with truffle jus and foie gras sounded tempting, I opted for the three-course business lunch menu.
The first course presented itself as a pumpkin soufflé, surrounded by a creamy goat cheese fondue and garnished with fine potato strips. The soufflé itself had a somewhat firmer consistency than expected and a mild, subtle pumpkin flavor.
The true star of this course, however, was the goat cheese fondue: pleasantly creamy in consistency and strong in aroma. It brought an authentic fondue feeling, with the goat cheese shining through subtly but distinctly. A refined combination that left you wanting more.
The main course was artfully arranged: a pork roll roast sat atop a creamy rosemary mashed potato and kale, surrounded by a rich dark jus.
The roll roast impressed with a perfectly seared crackling that released wonderful roasted aromas. The inside was very tender, almost melting. The jus was rich and complex, with barbecue-like notes. Combined with the roll roast, it created a great depth of flavor. The rosemary mashed potato had a flowing consistency and was a worthy accompaniment. The kale, served under the roll roast, retained its characteristic bite.
The dessert first presented itself as an imposing mountain of airy whipped cream, decorated with dark chocolate shavings. Beneath it lay the chestnut cream – essentially a classic vermicelles with a generous portion of cream.
Flavor-wise, the dessert was solid, but the cream dominated a bit too much. A more balanced ratio between chestnut and cream would have added additional refinement to the finish.
