- Moules Edy – moved from Helvetiaplatz to its new home at the Goldener Schlüssel
- Moules au Pernod served hot in a bowl on the réchaud with a metal bucket for shells – classic and practical
- Pernod broth with garlic and onions – truly spot on
- Rustic, clean historic inn with warm, straightforward service
Arrival: Dark from outside, cosy within
From the street, the Goldener Schlüssel on Rathausgasse looks rather dark – almost closed. Luckily we had a reservation. Step inside and you’re greeted by a rustic, clean historic inn. One of Bern’s oldest taverns, it still retains plenty of charm with its wooden vaulted ceiling.
The food: Moules Edy has found a new home
Starter: Salad
I started with a small salad. The dressing seemed Italian, but the main issue was freshness – the leaves were already limp at the bottom, suggesting they’d been sitting for a while.
Main: Moules au Pernod
The main reason for coming was Moules Edy. After moving from Helvetiaplatz, Bern’s mussel institution has made itself at home at the Goldener Schlüssel. I went for the Moules au Pernod.
They arrived in a bowl on a réchaud to keep them piping hot, with a classic metal bucket for the empty shells. The broth was absolutely spot on – garlic, onions, Pernod and that wonderful mussel stock. Just as you’d hope from Moules Edy.
Service
Service was warm, friendly and genuinely eager to help – unpretentious and straightforward, just the way it should be in a proper Bernese inn.
Verdict
The move suits Moules Edy well. The mussels remain a real treat, especially the Moules au Pernod in that glorious hot broth. The only weak point was the limp salad. All in all, a solid 4.1 out of 5 – a clear recommendation for the mussels.
