Our Dining Experience at Restaurant Bay Bern
Restaurant Bay Bern: Modern Architecture on Hodlerstrasse
From Hodlerstrasse, a signpost leads to a ramp that goes slightly downwards to the restaurant.
From the outside, a clear concrete structure is visible, with vines climbing up its facade.
Inside, a large window front, support columns, and a modern, rather minimalist decor dominate: wooden tables, upholstered armchairs, lots of light, parquet flooring, and a view of the neighbourhood near the Aare. The modern interior creates an elegant yet quiet atmosphere that clearly stands out from the classic Bernese Old Town style – also very suitable for a business lunch.
The tables are simply but elegantly set. Notably, wine glasses are not placed on the table by default – the reason for this is unknown to the author.
Uncomplicated, Authentic Service
The service greeted me warmly and immediately knew about my reservation. The staff seemed authentic and provided competent information about drinks and menus. The only thing was the pace was a bit leisurely – not bothersome, but noticeable.
Creative Fusion Cuisine: From Salad to Ragout
The lunch menu offers a small, deliberately unusual selection. Classics are reinterpreted, and some combinations are surprising – for example, a beef ragout with beans on focaccia or a gratinated “Ghacktes” with rösti potatoes.
What appealed to me most from Bay’s lunch menus was the tender braised beef ragout on focaccia, complemented by a crisp market salad.
The salad consisted of leafy greens, carrot strips, and a creamy dressing with mild acidity. It was topped with roasted pumpkin seeds and poppy seeds – nutty, aromatic, and excellent in combination.
The beef ragout impressed with tender braised meat, harmonious flavours, and well-cooked beans. The focaccia was partly underneath the ragout, soaking up all the flavours. One piece of focaccia also served as decoration – this time crisply toasted.
To finish, I treated myself to a fior di latte ice cream with caramelised roasted nuts. Creamy, soft in flavour, and pleasantly sweet-crunchy from the nuts: a rounded, fine conclusion.
