Ristorante Toscana in Bern is located slightly outside the city center, near Weissenbühl station. At Toscana, you’ll find pizzas, pasta, and other Italian dishes. The restaurant and its kitchen are quite small, yet much of the food is clearly homemade – the allumette fries are definitely hand-cut.
The restaurant is small, and the furnishings are simple and cozy. The service is very personal, which creates a great atmosphere. The food, especially the pizza, is usually good quality, and the prices are comparable to other Italian restaurants. For these reasons, a visit slightly off the city center is well worth it.
Visit to Ristorante Toscana in Bern
Ristorante Toscana is located right next to the Beaumont tram stop. From the outside and upon entering, you notice the restaurant is a bit older. The waiter quickly poured the beer I ordered after sitting down. In addition to draft beer, there are various Italian bottled beers.
For my meal, I ordered a salad and veal paillard. The salad consisted of various lettuce leaves, including arugula and lamb’s lettuce. The salad was served on plates with a special shape.
The veal paillard had attractive grill marks and a grilled flavor. The menu advertised homemade herb butter, but unfortunately none was visible when served. The risotto was a bit clumpy, topped with grana padano or parmesan pieces. Overall, the main course was okay.
In addition to my main course, I was able to sample from my colleagues’ plates. The pizza was excellent, the saltimbocca very tasty, and the beef fillet with herb butter also tasted good. The allumette fries with the beef fillet appeared to be homemade but were somewhat greasy.
Atmosphere
The interior is simple and a bit dated. Nevertheless, it creates a pleasantly cozy atmosphere. During our visit, there were hardly any other guests – Toscana is clearly a neighborhood restaurant that tourists rarely find.
Service
The service is friendly and pleasant. It’s worth noting that the main courses were not served all at once, but one plate after another. A nice touch was that the waiter treated us to a coffee at the end.
Quality
The green salad was good, with different types of lettuce. The veal paillard with risotto was good, though the risotto was a bit clumpy. The pizza, saltimbocca, and beef fillet were all good quality. Unfortunately, the allumette fries were really too greasy.
Price
Price-wise, the salad at CHF 7.50 is reasonable, as are the pizza prices. For a meal with salad, pasta or pizza, mineral water, and coffee, expect to pay around CHF 40.
