Our Dining Experience at Klötzlikeller Bern
A Descent into Bernese History
From Gerechtigkeitsgasse, a lantern points the way to Klötzlikeller.
A staircase then leads down into the historic vaulted cellar.
An impressive brick vault reveals itself. Inside are stylishly set tables with white tablecloths. The atmosphere is rustic yet elegant – a perfect place for a cozy evening in Bern’s Old Town.
Straightforward and Genuine Service
The service deserves special praise. We experienced it as natural and by no means artificial. A particular highlight was how a small “crisis” was handled: when we mentioned that the fondue was boiling too hard due to a stuck spirit burner and was threatening to “break” (separate), the service staff reacted immediately. The fondue was taken to the kitchen, expertly rescued there, and came back to the table in perfect consistency. That’s true hospitality and expertise.
Swiss Classics: From Fresh Salad to Fondue
The menu is deliberately simple and a clear commitment to Swiss cuisine.
My meal started with a small green salad. It was garnished with cress. Crisp, fresh, and an ideal start.
The cheese fondue (sourced from the traditional shop Chäsbueb) was very savory and strong in flavor. At first, the consistency seemed a bit runny, but that quickly resolved. It was served classically with fresh bread and “Gschwellti” (small whole potatoes), which offered a welcome change from bread alone.
Although we went for the fondue, the menu also offers classics like Wiener schnitzel or cordon bleu.
