Highlights

  • 🌳 Shady terrace under chestnut trees – a cool retreat in the middle of Länggasse
  • 🥩 Succulent entrecôte and tender Zürcher Geschnetzeltes – Swiss classics at their best
  • 🏠 Historic restaurant in a traditional building
  • 💁 Attentive service – including a personal apology from the chef when needed

Beaulieu Bern is a traditional restaurant in the Länggasse quarter. From the outside, the historic building first catches your eye. But the real highlight is next to the building: an inviting terrace in the shade of large chestnut trees. I have visited Beaulieu twice now – most recently in June 2026. A visit is well worth it!

    Second Visit (June 2026)

Terrace of Beaulieu under the chestnut trees

It was extremely hot on this June day, and I knew the chestnut trees on Beaulieu’s terrace in Länggasse would provide cooling shade. And indeed they did. Although it was very hot outside, it was pleasantly cool under the trees – perfect for a relaxed meal.

I ordered a green salad and Zürcher Geschnetzeltes with rösti. The salad dressing was creamy and delicious. The salad itself was frisée, which was a bit unwieldy to eat – so I cut it into smaller pieces.

The Zürcher Geschnetzeltes consisted of tender pan-fried veal with a sauce made from fresh mushrooms. It was served with perfectly cooked vegetables. The rösti was nicely crispy. The sauce was perhaps a bit too thin, but that’s complaining at a high level.

My dining companion’s calf’s liver was undercooked on first serving – almost raw. He asked the server to cook it a bit more. Without hesitation, the meat was taken back, and my colleague received a fresh new portion. The owner personally came by after the meal to apologise. That was handled perfectly and shows the high service standards.

Beaulieu’s menu is typically Swiss. The prices are partly high, for example CHF 59 for an entrecôte. But there are also more affordable options. The atmosphere is relaxed. The terrace, the Swiss menu, and the solid quality make Beaulieu a clear recommendation.

    First Visit (May 2025)

Since it was also sunny and warm during my first visit to Beaulieu, I chose a table on the shady terrace. A look at the menu confirmed Beaulieu’s focus on Swiss classics: cheese specialities like fondue, various rösti variations, Zürcher Geschnetzeltes, and seasonal specialities.

The salad, consisting of various leafy greens, was served in a small bowl. The not-too-creamy dressing suited my taste. Fresh baguette was also served.

    Entrecôte at Beaulieu Bern

The entrecôte was served on a well-preheated plate, a sign of careful kitchen work. Besides the herb sauce on the plate, the guest also receives a small pitcher of extra sauce. The entrecôte was perfectly cooked medium-rare and was served sliced against the grain. The unusual cut became a topic of conversation with the head of service, who explained that meat can be prepared tender this way. The meat was very tender and paired wonderfully with the aromatic herb sauce.

The service was attentive and professional without being intrusive. The head of service also took time for a brief chat about the preparation of the dish.
