Casa d’Italia Bern is an institution in Bern’s dining scene. Initially run as a club restaurant, it has been open to the public since 1982. It offers authentic and simple Italian cuisine.
Our Dining Experience at Casa d’Italia Bern
Casa d’Italia Bern is located in the Länggasse quarter, at the intersection of Länggassstrasse and Bühlstrasse. The restaurant is a little hidden but easily recognisable by the modest sign with the Italian tricolour.
While one terrace faces Bühlstrasse, the larger terrace is behind the house. There is a garden with chestnut trees and umbrellas providing plenty of shade – perfect for warm days. Inside, the interior is purposefully simple and invites an uncomplicated dining experience.
Comprehensive Menu with a Good Selection of Vegan Dishes and Drinks
Casa d’Italia has a broad offering of typical Italian dishes. There are extensive menus for antipasti, pasta, pizza, as well as meat and fish dishes. Particularly noteworthy and a real highlight is the vegan menu – a truly great and well-thought-out offering! From all the delicious dishes, I chose a green salad and an ossobuco.
The green salad consisted of iceberg lettuce and a slice of tomato – classic and purist. The aromatic Italian dressing was finely drizzled over the salad and had a creamy consistency. Fresh white bread was served alongside.
The main course, ossobuco, featured a beautifully meaty piece of veal shank with a nice marrowbone. It contained a good amount of marrow. It was served with a puréed braising sauce and a saffron risotto. The dish was decorated with some curly parsley. The veal shank was tenderly braised and had an authentic, deep flavour.
For dessert, we treated ourselves to an affogato – vanilla ice cream with an espresso poured over it. It had a nice strong espresso flavour and was the perfect ending.
