Welcome to my first “Flashback” from my culinary diary. Today, I’m going back in time to June 2024, when I paid a visit to Aarbergerhof in Bern. Aarbergerhof, often simply called “Araber” in Bernese dialect, is known as a place that promises class and quality. My visit back then proved that this Bernese classic is always a solid choice.
Dining Experience at Aarbergerhof Bern (June 2024)
Good Reception Upon Arrival at Aarbergerhof Bern
From the moment I walked in, I felt at home at Aarbergerhof. We were quickly seated, and our drink order was taken promptly. The waiter rattled off the open-beer varieties without hesitation – a small detail that radiates competence and good service, which I immediately remembered positively. Shortly after, the beer was on the table: a seasonal beer from the Bernese Lohnbrauerei, with its fresh yeast flavour hitting the spot.
Salad That Convinces
As a starter, I ordered a salad, which didn’t take long to arrive. It was generously portioned, with just the right amount of dressing – a small but important detail. There was a bit little bread on the table, but I was sure we could have easily gotten more on request.
The Main Course: Generous Portion of Beef Filet Cubes in Mustard Sauce
My main course was beef filet cubes in mustard sauce, accompanied by pasta and cauliflower. It was served very quickly as well. Visually, the dish made a good impression. I noticed that there was relatively little pasta compared to the meat. The beef filet cubes were tender, perfectly cooked, and not dry – evidence of high-quality cooking. The mustard sauce was well-balanced, not overly mustard-heavy, but harmoniously rounded out with roast jus. The sides fit well, and the temperature of the dish was ideal. As criticism at a high level, I might note that the pasta was perhaps a bit too salty and the cauliflower slightly too soft.
We enjoyed a Langhe from Piedmont with it – a light and digestible wine that paired very well with the dish.
Restaurant Aarbergerhof as a “Solid Choice”
Aarbergerhof lived up to its reputation as a “solid choice.” In all my visits there, high-quality food has been served, with attentive and uncomplicated service.
